Health and Safety

Facts state that over 700 babies and small children drown each year, often in very shallow water.

Water holds a huge curiosity for babies and young children as the formless element fascinates them with it clarity and swirling movements, so your little one will always be drawn to it. Therefore as well as learning water confidence we focus on water safety and life saving techniques from as young as 6 months old.

Mrs J Williams of Southgate London told one of our instructors that her husband watched in amazement as their two year old Simon jumped into the pool on a recent holiday to Barbados turned himself around underwater kicking back to the side to hold on.

Imagine how a toddler who has not had swimming lesson react in this situation.
Remember babies are familiar with water as they spent a considerable amount of time in a water filled womb of safety.

Natural Ability

All babies are born with the natural ability to hold his/her breath when submerged in water.
This is a natural protective reflex “the mammalian Diving Reflex”, your little one will instinctively hold their breath when their face comes into contact with water.

Using word association and repetition we increase and develop this instinctive ability at the pace relevant to the Childs level of progression.

Pool Care & Temperature

All pools used are run in accordance with current health and safety regulations and are treated and checked regularly.
BORN TO SWIM teaches in temperatures of 30-32 degrees as we believe this temperature provokes active movement, increases breathing therefore activating the cardiovascular system. At this temperature and the movement it promotes, muscle tone strength and endurance is increased.

Immunisation

Medical research and guidance shows that your baby does not have to have completed the full immunisation course before you take your little one swimming. However we do advise that you speak to your G.P or health visitor if you have any doubts about pre immunisation baby swimming. BORN TO SWIM has several babies who swim with us who were not fully immunised, but we leave that up to you and the family doctor.

Baby Care

Never swim your baby if they have a cold, ear infection or a stomach bug. After swimming always ensure that your baby’s ears are completely dry and always bring a hat to pull over the ears. Bring a towel to poolside as
temperatures may vary slightly, as you transfer to the changing areas

Requirements

Always wear a re-usable aqua nappy or a disposable one
Aqua nappies can be purchased from BORN TO SWIM @ £9.99 Inc postage and packing.
